A wire from Greymouth says the State coalminers held a siopwork meeting yesterday morning, and decided by 158 votes to 18 not to resume work until a medical man ha* been secured for the district.
The Otago Drivers 'Union has decided to give the employers, through the PTess, one week's notice, with a view to considering their position regarding the present dispute, and affirmed their confidence in the Transport Federation.

By this m.ars the men come under the military restrictions, which nrohibit the pale of liquor to soldiers undergoing medical treatment.
A cordial invitation has been extended to the Taihape Band to attend th> Tiriraukawa sports on Thursday next, when a right royal time is promised them. The hospitality of the Tiriraukawa people is proverbial, and those who make the journey will have"no thing to regret. A meeting of bandsmen will be held at the bandroom on Wednesday evening (to-morrow) of those able to get away, when all arrangements will be completed.
Mr. R. W. MeVilly, assistant-general manager, of railways, has been appointed general manager as from April 30 next, when the present manager, Mr. Hiley, will retire. The term for wMcn Mr. Hilcy was originally appointed expired in August last, and he expressed a wish then to have his engagement terminated, as he desired to return to England. At the special request of the Government, Mr. Hiley agreed to retain his position until the close of the financial year.

The Acting-Postmaster-General has received advice from the London headquarters of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force that it was hoped that all men of the force who left the Dominion in 1916 will embark on their return by the end of April, 1917 men by the end of May, and 1918 men by the end of June. papers, should be restricted accordingly. The time now occupied in the transit of a letter between New Zealand and the United Kingdom is Sboiit 45 days and of parcels and papers about two months.
'A returned soldier named Dudley McKenzie, a Military Medallist, was drowned at Rona Bay, Wellington, on Saturday afternoon. McKenzic, who could not swim, got into difficulties through a strong undercurrent. A companion named Harrison managed to reach him, but, being only a moderate swimmer, was unable to hold McKenzie. Ernest Hunt also made a strenuous attempt at rescue, but became exhausted. Harrison was floating away with the tide, but was rescued by a passing rowing boat. McKenzies' body was recovered on Saturday night, two miles from the scene of the accident.
Reports from North Canterbury, where harvesting operations are now in full swing, indicate that the yields generally should be heavy. "Honeydews," a natural phenomenon which is rarely seen, but which when it does appear is regarded as one of the surest heralds of a heavy wheat yield, is reported on a Swannanoa crops, which certainly promises to thresh out well.
