THE MO AN A INQUIRY. | o | MORE EXPERT EVIDENCE. i —— j WELLINGTON, Jan. 31. | The inquiry concerning the deaths on the steamer Moana was continued to-day. Mr. W. Donovan, Analyst of the Dominion Laboratories, declared that he found no trace of cyanide in soda wat.'r bottles or lemons from the ship. Professor Easterfield gave evidence that there was no cyanide in any soda water impounded by the police. The merest trace could have been detected with oertiainty. Ho found no cyanide in samples taken from the works of Messrs. Thomson and Lewis It was a moral impossibility for a bottle of soda water containing cyanide to leave the firm’s Wellington works. He inferred that cyanide found in empty bottles on the Moana was placed in the bottles subsequent to them leaving the works. He visited the surgery on thie and found two one-ounce bottles of prussic lacid, which had never been opened. The Coroner remarked, in reply to counsel, that hie was strongly of opinion that the poison was not self-ad-ministrated by either of the victims. The inquiry was adjourned to enable further investigations re drugs supplied with the ship’s stores. A BRAVE CONSTABLE. WELLINGTON, Jan. 31 Constable Cleverley has been presented with the Royal Humane Society’s medal for endeavouring to save the life of Cornelius Boyle from drowning. Boyle, a fireman, fell info 'the harbour, and 'Cleverley, full clothed, jumped into the water, .and [ for 20 minutes supported him until I help came. Boyle subsequently died..

N.Z. WOOL FOE ¥.S. 100,000 ■-BALES PURCHASED, :■ CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 31 Mr W. I. Carney, of Armour and Go., Christchurch, has received cable advice from Mr Baker, United States Secretary for War, stating - that his appointment to represent” . the United States in connection with the purchase of New Zealand wool, has been confirmed. This refers to the purchase by the United States Government of 200,000 bales of New Zealand wool from the Imperial Government. This shipping is being arranged by the American Government and four steamers have already left with part of the purchase. The wool has been selected by Government, valuers, and will be representative of the different qualities of which the New Zealand clip is eomposcu.
