GERMANY'S TROUBLES.
CONFLICTING REPORTS. LUXEMBURG'S TRAGIC END. LONDON, January 19. Reports from Copenhagen state that Dr. Liebknecht was shot half an hour after being court-martialled and sentenced to death. There are no details.. The reports also state that Eosa Luxembourg was killed while attempting to escape. ZURICH, January 19 An armed car conveying Dr. Liebknecht and Hei-r 'Schoenberg, from the police station to the central station at Berlin, broke down and the guards decided to walk Dr. Liebknecht. He attempted to escape, and was killed instantaneously, being shot between the shoulders. The Government ordered ah inquiry to ascertain if bloodshed could have been averted. Lynchers nearly succeeded in dragging Rosa Luxembourg from the car in which her guards wore driving her to prison. She was almost torn to pieces before being shot. FULL ACCOUNT OF THE SHOOTING. After arrest, Liebknccht, and Rosa Luxembourg were taken to the hotel Aden, headquarters of the guard of cavalry division, Diebkncefct denied his identity, but on being searched his indentity was estabished. He was then taken in an automobile. The crowd outside became so infuriated that they seized Liebknccht and soundly thrashed him. As the crowd increased they forced an entry in to the hotel. The Guards attempted to -remove Rosa, but the crowd threw themselves upon her and beat her unconscious: In this condition she was placed in an automobile and driven away. A man however jumped in and shot her through the head. The mob took possession of her body, the whereabouts of which is unknown. Meanwhile Liebknccht had been shot in attempting to escape. His captors hustled him into a motor car, which broke down going to, Moabit prison, where officers in command of the escort determined to take him pending the Government's decision. The officers" asked Liebknccht if he wanted another car or preferred to walk. Liebknccht said: "I will walk."' A few moments later he made a dash for freedom and paid no heed to the call to stop, though his guards, when he attempted to escape had raised their rifles. He, was brought down a few yards' range. Death wos instantaneous.
DEMOCRATIC GERMANY. B'ADEN'S NATIONAL ASSEMBLY. LONDON January 19 A wireless message from Berlin states that the first separate National Assembly for Germany was held on January 15 at Karlsruhe, 107 deputies, including nine 'women being present. The Minister President, thanked the Baden soldiers for their services in the war, and said that the Grand Duke of Baden had not participated in the war cither at the beginning or at the end. Therefore the Government expressed its thanks to the unassuming wearer of the crown and his heir. The Minister. President favoured Imperial unity, declaring: "We are desirious, above all, of remaining a great democratic State."
FIGHTING IN BERLIN. LIEBKNECHT'S LAST ARTICLE. Received 9.20 a.m. AMSTERDAM, January 17. Pighting continued at Berlin on Wednesday evening around the Reichstag building. Grenades were freely used. Houses are being searched for arms and ammunition.
Fifty thousand copies of "Rote Fahn" were seized, containing Liebknecht's last article declaring that he and Luxembourg had not fled. He said: We are not beaten; whether they chain us or not victory will be ours. The Spartacus men's world revolution is a journey to Golgotha of the German labouring class which is not yet ended, but the dav of deliverance is near.
RIOTS AND STRIKES. LONDON, Jariua"r7 **Rl'. Riots marked the German elections of a National Assembly. There is a general strike a* Leipzig. The city is without gas or water. A mob destroyed the election bureau. HINDENBDURG NOT WANTED. LONDON, January 19. The Hague of thr "Times," states that Ebert decided that
it was unnecessary to employ Hindcnburg in Berlin. Hindeuburg has departed to Cassel. NERVOUSNESS IN BERLIN. PEAR OP REPRISALS. BERLIN UNDER MILITARY CONTROL. Received 11 a.m. AMSTERDAM, January 17. Extreme nervousness is felt in Berlin that the deaths of Liebknecht and Luxembourg will Cause reprisals. Most people fear fresh violence. Tfiere~ls the same tension as prior to the Bolshevik rising, but the Government is fully prepared. The whole of Berlin is in military occupation. "Searches for arms continue and the police and military are empowered to search peopT? in streets without question. Crowds in the streets are absolutely forbidden.
