WAITERS' STRIKE IN BERLIN
EATING HOUSES CLOSED

The Daily Chronicle's Amsterdam correspondent states the strikes and lockouts, of waiters in Berlin has spread to such an extent that the city is practically without [hotels, restaurants and cafes. The strikers by pure terrorism compelled the large establishments io close. They broke hundreds of wine bottles and stole vast quantities of eatables and cutlery. The police did not interfere. Twenty thousand waiters are either striking or locked out.

PROGRESS OF EVENTS VARIOUS REPORTS. f Received noon. LONDON, January S. Berlin messages received from various sources in Berlin,. including Ebcrt's statements circulated by German wireless show the following course of recent events. The Spartacus League on Sunday joined the Independent Socialists under the halfcrazy. firebrand Liebknecht, who attempted to seize power. The prime object as to stop a general election. Ebcrt and Schcidemann were taken unawares, and proved irresolute, but threats of their personal safety finally determined them to resist by force of arms. During street righting on Monday and Tuesday, soldiers wearing steel helmets fired rifles from windows, and machine-guns and grenades were freely used. One report says three hundred were killed, at Wilkelplatz, and Brandenburg gate on Tuesday morning.
BERLIN'S BLOODIEST DAY
DESPERATE FIGHTING IN CITY.

The Exchange Telegraph's Amsterdam correspondent states that the latest acoounts from Berlin show that Tuesday was the bloodiest day in Berlin's history; it is reported one hundred were killed. The Spartacusers were plentifully supplied with arms after the seizure of the arsenals. Fighting began on Monday and continued all night long. Numerous encounters took place at W.ertheini's stores, the War Ministry, Leipsiger Strasse, and also at the Barracks, where the troops used minerwerfers. A severe fight took place for the food office, which was captured. A detachment of Government troops sent an ultimatum to the Spartacusers to quit the Wolff Bureau i)n ten minutes, but Government troops refused to attack, and marched away. General Groener offered to take forty regiments of trustworthy troops to the . capital to assist the Government. It is believed Hindenburg has already i arrived.

It is reported that Ebert and Schiedemami on Monday addressed an enthusiastic meeting outside the Chajiicellor's palace. Schideniann declared the Spartacusers ordered himself and Ebert to be shot, and he urged the crowd to resist the Spartacists. Those who were rnilitaiy trained would receive arms. Dense crowds appeared in the streets oin Tuesday and there was intense excitement. Streets wore a stern military aspect. Brandenburg Gate aDd surrounding buildings, and all Government buildings, bristled with machine guns. The Government served out. flame-throwers. Evidently the Government considers their conciliatory efforts are doomed to failure. They had offered to discuss general disarmament with the Spartacusers, who had not responded. It Ts reported the Government is endavouring to seize Liebknecht. The Spartacusers entered the homes of many politicians, seizing papers, though there is a notable absence of ordinary pillage. During Wednesday the Government and Spar, tacusers held day-long 'negotiations to allay the tumult, but without result, as the leaders on both sides proved unable to control the mobs in the streets. Ebert states, in view of the disturbances, the Government summoned its supporters during Sunday night. There has commenced a general strike as a tremendous dmonstration against the terror of a brutal minority. These demonstrations assumed gigantic proportions on Monday. The Government supporters throughout are unarmed, while, owing to the attitude of the Spartacusers, shooting commenced at the Unter den Linden and Potsdamerplatz. Ih the midst of the trouble a deputation of Spartacusers, with a white flag, approached the cordon of Government troops to surrender.
SPARTACUSERS DRIVEN OUT. CIVIL WAR SPREADING. BERLIN, Jan. 9. The German Government troops have driven out the Spartacusers from the most important positions in the city. There is much artillery fighting PARIS, Jan. 9. It is reported the civil war is spreadingin Rhincland and Bavaria. The Spartacusers have* proclaimed a neAV government at Berlin. AMERICAN FLAG HAULED DOWN Received noon. BERLIN, Jan. 7. General Harris, head of the" American mission, was compelled to haul down the American flag at the Allow Hotel, wherein Allied representatives took refuge.
