THE OLD YEAR AND THE NEW

The old year, with all its trials, joys and sorrows, was rung out very quietly on Tuesday. The engines in the railway yards gave forth a paen 'of welcome to the new year, and a few vocalists endeavoured to greet the dawn of another year in a fitting manner. A watchnight service was hold in the Methodist Church in the customary manner. On Tuesday afternoon there was a large attendance of country people in town, and apparently business was brisk. Wednesday morning broke in anything but an encouraging manner, and the many people who were on pleasure bent, could bo seen with dubious looks on their faces and overcoats on their arms. The day was not all that could be desired, the weather beingcold, with a shower or two during the day. A goodly number travelled by train to the Marton Races.

The Taihapc Bowling Green was well patronised, the attraction being a Pairs Tournament, held under B'arnott’s Progressive Pairs conditions. Afternoon tea was provided, and a most enjoyable day was spent. The green this year is playing particularly well. The tournament was to have been continued to-day, but the heavy downpour of rain prevented the programme as originally arranged being carried out.
