THE LATE CR. CHAMPION AND H. RUSSELL.

At the meeting of the Borough Council last night, the Mayor satted that before proceeding with the reading of the minutes he would like to refer to the loss the Council has sustaned in the "death of Cr. Ghamxuon. Their Tate comrade at the Council table was a man who gave ungrudgingly of his time to what he thought were the best interests of the Boreagh. He could speak at some length fin the many sterling qualities of the late councillor, hut contented himself by saying Cr Champion was a straight forward, honourable gentleman. He moved; “That this Council place on record the loss the borough had sustained through the death of the late Cr. Champion, and the single-minded and disinterested efforts of the late councillor, and that the Council Convey to the widow the sympathy of the Council in her great loss.” Cr. Wrightson seconded the motion, stating he quite endorsed the Mayor’ B remarks. Their late comrade was a noble and devoted public servant. Gr. Joblin bore testimony to the many sterling qualities of the late Cr. Champion both as a public servant and a private citizen. Ci*. Turnbull endorsed the remarks Of Tile previous speaker, stating he had always found the late councillor a /straight man. Crs. Reid and Dashwood also spok e a few words appreciative of Cr Champion. The motion was then put, and carried in silence, the councillors standing. Before resuming his seat, the JMayor referred to the loss the Coun’Wl had sustained in the death of one of its most trusted employees, Mr Harry Russell. The Mayor voiced the feelings of the Council when he stated that Mr Russell had given his' services ungrudgingly and had never failed to turn out in storm and stress to see that the waterworks were kept clear. He moved that a letter be sent to the widow conveying the Council’s sympathy in her great loss! and appreciation of the services of her late husband. The motion was carried, the Council standing.
