FOOD REGULATIONS IN ELIZABETH'S TIME.
The years from 1594. to 1598 were heavy war years ic England, food-pro , ducts were scarce and prices high:j There was much privation and dis-') order. The Government undertook: the following steps to overcome the.l difficulty. One set of measures wasi for the beter distribution of what food* there was in England. Another was* directed towards increasing the avails ' able supply. > ' '' The authorities, however, did not; establish a fixed legal price; no substitutes were provided for. The Government, town authorities, and rural gentry were constantly in fear of popular uprisings, and there were sev'eral threatening movements, which were vigorously punished. No satisfactory method of contnclling the supply and price of food was worked out '.and the suffering continued until better crops developed. J
