j QUARANTINED FOE SEVEN DAYS AUCKLAND, December 1. The Alakura, arrived from Vancouver at 7 a.m., anchoring in the quarantine anchorage, where she was inspected by Dr. Frengley and Dr. Russell (Port Health Officer) and Dr. Hughes (District Health Officer). Afterwards they conferred with the Mayor and the Citizens’ Committee j with respect to the vessels’ future moevmcnts. It was decided that the vessel bo quarantined for seven days. Xo further information is available pending an official statement by Dr. Frengley. The Mayor states that the Citizens’ Committee is satisfied with Dr. Frengloy’s arrangements. As the Alakura’s mails total 2600 bags, fumigation will take several days. Dr. Frengley stated yesterday that there was no influenza on hoard. There were five cases of measles, which had recovered. The last case was left in hospital at Suva. It is not known whether the case was or was not a passenger for Suva. WELLINGTON, December 1. The Spcrctary if the G.P.O. is advised that the Alakura. anchored 20 miles from Motuihi. Auckland, Influenza is in board amongst the crew. The vessel goes into quarantine. The mails will be fumigated and brought ashore. OFFICIAL REPORT. ALL MEASLES CASES RECOVERED. INFLUENZA SYMPTOMS ABOARD. SHIP QUARANTINED FOR SEVEN DAYS. AUCKLAND, this day. The following statement has been issued by Dr. Frengley: “I bearded the Alakura at an anchorage adjacent to Motuihi Island. It was found that five persons had contracted measles. Three of these, children, had a mild attack, and are now quite well. The fourth case was on officer of the ship who has recovered, and the fifth case was put off at Fiji. No persons or goods were taken on at Suva, and no illness was found among the passengers . Unfortunately, among the crew, five were found to be suffering from influenza, in some symptoms. These cases have been removed to the caretaker’s house. The decision regarding the remaining passengers and crew is that the ship is quarantined for seven days; that all passengers and crew under go a zinc sulphate inhalation at least once daily; that all well passengers and crew shall perform quarantine conditions icn board ship; that anyone taking sick shall at once be isolated and removed quickly to the Island. The mails arc- to be taken off to Motuihi, and all bags thoroughly sprayed with formalin at Motuihi. The bags again to be sprayed and exposed as fully as possible to air and sunshine.”
