The Influenza Epidemic.
AUCKLAND ALMOST FREE, Speaking practically, the epidemic is over in Auckland now. Its effects are diminishing',- and before long most of them w-m have disappeared. There wore no mortalities in any of the temporary hospitals yesterday, and only two happened in the General Hospital, which is now the only one that is admitting influenza patients. Almost every case in the auxiliary institutions is convalescent, and no new eases have been admitted to the wards there 'during the last five days. Thus,-as the patients recover and are sent away to the convalescent homes, these hospitals will gradually become vacant. The Y.W.C.A. Nursery will not be closed for some time yet because many of the children have their parents still ill. Since these two buildings opened as hospital and nursery only four children have died in them. The disease iat one time threatened to attack children with malignity, but by prompt action it was stayed, and the children’ have been victims of mild attacks for' the most i part. All things are practically normal again, and the work for the different organisations has decreased so much that most of them, as influenza fighters, will soon cease to exist. There is yet no sign that the restrictions arc being removed. No doubt this is due to the hold the disease still has in many of the outlying districts, and to the caution of the Minister of Health.
The influenza position is practically normal. Patients arc being rapidly discharged from the temporary hospitals, two of which will be closed towards the end of the week.
