THE COST OP LIVING. o MEETING IN WELLINGTON. A WARNING TO THE ’GOVERNMENT. WELLINGTON, this day. The meeting called by His Worship the Mayor to consider 'the cost of living passed a resolution in the direction of drawing the attention of the Government to the grave discontent of the working people as a result of the outrageous price of food, clothing, and and oalled on the Government to make legislation to cope with the situation the first urgent business of the session.
The Government was strongly condemned by the speakers, one of whom said if a remedy was not forthcoming labour organisations would takb the law into their own hands. Another said if they wanted to deal effectively with the cost of living they should call on the Government to get out. The Mayor deprecated such statements, but both were applauded INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC. SERIOUS POSITION IN AUCKLAND AUCKLAND, this day. There was only one death from influenza, at the Hospital yesterday, but about twelve deaths in the city and suburbs. Twelve more nurses and also a doctor who .arrived from the south are invalided. There are 224 cases in the hospital at Narrow Neck Camp, some of them pneumonia. INCREASED VOTE FOR EDUCATION. PUBLIC MEETING RESOLUTION NEW PLYMOUTH, this day A public meeting last night resolved in favour of increasing the education vote to three millions, offering greater inducements to young people to enter the teaching profession, also that the teachers’ salaries _ generally should be in keeping with their work.
