(By “Equitas.”) Gloaming has been giving a good account of himself since arriving from Australia. The Friedlander pair Sedd-el-Bahr and Royal Star, have put in an appearance at Trenthanr. Local punters wefe'on Kipling to a man first day at ‘ Masterton, but he failed oh the second day. Mr. H. M. Speed, who used to own Kew and other horses, has returned from the front. There are 22 horses left in the New Zealand Cup, and 29 have accepted for, the Stewards’ Handicap L. Morris Wll ride Battle Song, Utuwai, Bonny Briar, and Mandrake Tat Trentham.
There are 25 horses engaged in the Rimutaka Handicap at Wellington, 29 in the Taita Handicap, 15 in the Wellington Handicap. 35 in the October Handicap, 20 in the Wainui Handicap, and 22 in the -Shorts Handicap. H. Gray will ride Sasanof in the New Zealand Cup, A. Reed will be on Menelaus, R. Reed on Depredation, C. Emerson will -ride Cynic, L. Morris will be on Mascot, and M. MeCarten Battle Song. It is reported (says a Wellington writer “Tobunga”) that the fact of J. W. Lowe being ill at Masterton resulted in all The horses under his charge being scratched for the second day at Masterton. The reason ad-* vanced may or may not be the key to the position. Pique may have something to do with it, as some of the owners do not like being carpeted, no matter what the cause is.
Biplane is expected to return to Wellington this week. Cyresian is being spoken of a likely sort of winner for the 'Avondale Guineas. He started five times as a two-year-old, winning once and registering one third. He ran second to Demos at Otaki since commencing his three-year-old careen The wife of a Masterton solicitor was one of the lucky ones to draw the big dividend —nearly three-quar-ters of a century—paid by Inah. Inah’s number on the card was 13. The lady in question backed Inah just because her own name was Inah, and she was the thirteenth member of her family. Kipling’s easy win in the Dash Hack at Masterton has led some sports to give the Demosthenes colt a big chance in the Great Northern Guineas. On the second day, carrying 91b less, but in better company, Kipling faded away. Probably the heavy going and the rough weather had something to do with Kipling’s failure to come up to his backers’ expectations. At lOOOgns he looks, however, a good investment for his owner.
