TAKING TOLL OF THE PEOPLE. Received 11.40 a.m. CAPETOWN, Oct 22. A Pretoria message states the epidemic there is assuming alarming proportions'. There is also great distress in the country districts. The Over-use of quinine and asperin is taking toll of the Dutch population. The military is rendering energetic assistance to the civil population. At Roberts’ Heights cantonments there are 1800 cases ,but the value of discipline and organisation is demonstrated by the low death rate compared with civilians.

A Johannesburg message states that during the last twelve days one thousand deaths occurred, whereof 400 were whites. The Bloemfontein death roll is over one thousand, whereof one hundred are whites. The epidemic is making strides in the native territories, where the mortality is said to be serious. .
