POLITICAL.
The political ball lias been set roll- , ing in the Rangitikei electorate by Mr . A. J. Joblin, who, in-this issue, notifies by advertisement that fie will be a candidate for the seat' at the next ! general election. ; In his announc*- ; ment Mr. Joblin is assuming that Mr. Newman, late member for Rangitikey, . will contest the Manawatu electorate ! and that Mr. Ri .W. Smith will stand , for Waimarino, tout Mr. Smith has not | yet publicly declared his intentions. The course of political events makes . almost immediate consideration and , organisation an urgent' matter. More | especially as the opinion is growing , , that this forthcoming session will end . j the present Parliament. Electors , will best consult their own interests . by selecting the man to represent them, rather than by waiting to have I one thrust upon them. Unfortunately, this territory, in the' heart of the , Island, is politically linked up with the suburbs of Wanganui, one hunI dred miles away, rendering it possible for Wanganui to have two representatives in ? Parliament and this huge, rich territory to be, for all prac- . tical purposes, disfranchised. If consideration of this subject is delayed . much longer settlers hereabout may find themselves represented 'by some element that is foreign to their inter- , I ests, when regrets and growls will be silly as well as impotent.
