LANCE-CORPORAL RAY EDOTI. , •Some time ago word came through ' that a Taihape lad, Lance-Corporal Ray Foote, had died from wounds ro ceived in action, and we have received a letter from Mrs. E. S. Archer, late o\ HihitakL but now residing in Wellington, stating that she bad received a letter from the lad's platdon commauder, Lieut. Randell (of Hihitahi), wn:f, not knowing Lance-Corporal Foote's parents' whereabouts, and seeing and censoring his letters to Mrs. Archer, bad written to her describing his death. Lance-Corporal Foote was wounded in the head on July 23rd, when his company captured a village called Marfaux, near Rheims, and lat. > or died in hospital. Lieut. Randell'3 letter states: —"Lance-Corporal Foote was a very smart lad, and did his work real well. He was always admired by the boys of his section, and it is with the deepest regret we learn of his death. Later on the commander of the battalion is sure to write to his parents, but I feel it my duty to let you know these details in the hope that it may help to console those who loved our late. L.-Corporal Foote in \ knowing lie died while bravely defending his country and right and liberty."

The deceased soldier was j wellknown and very popular in Taihape. His parents at one time resided in Utiku, and he was a member of the local post and telegraph staff. He was also a valued member of the Taihape ire Brigade, and a short time ago the brigade passed a vote of condolence to v the S deceased's relatives. He was a bright and popular young fellow, and his many friends in Taihape will regret the addition of His name to the already long list of Taihape boys whtf have made the supreme sacrifice. He left the local post office to join the* 18th Reinforcements, and has been in ; the firing line nearly two years.
