OHUTU NEWS.

(From our own Correspondent.) At the conclusion of work at the Egmont Box Company's mill on Tuesday afternoon a large number of friends foregathered to bid farewell to two of their fellow-workers, Messrs. E. Lalor and E. Kite, who are on final leave, and will be shortly leaving Xew Zealand for active service aboard. In making presentations to the guests, Mr A. Bonnie, spoke most highly of both men to the company, Mr Kite being with them seven years and Mr. Lalor four years as yard foreman. The large attendance present testified to the respect and esteem in which both men were held by their many friends, who heartily joined in wishing them good luck and a safe and speedy return. '•• Mr W. T. Ashton, in endorsing the remarks of the previous speaker, said there were a great many persons outside of those employed by the company, who wished to avail themselves of the opportunity of bidding good bye to the departing soldiers, and he had asked them to be present at the social and dance to be held that evening.

In replying, Mr Lalor, who also spoke on behalf of his comrade, thanked their mutual friends for their gifts ■and kind wishes. As they felt sure they were coming back they would not say good-bye. The social and dance held in the evening proved one of the most successful held in the district, friends of both soldiers being present from far and near. The "wee sma' hours" found the happy throng still indulging in dancing and musical items. Dance music was kindly supplied by Mr and Miss G-artner and Mrs. and Master Fenning, extras being played by Miss Gartner and Mr Olsen. Songs were contributed by Messrs. Deiaring, Drummond, Dyer, McEenzie, and Misses Kitty and Grace Fenning, and were much appreciated. A violin solo by Master Bertie Fenning, was also enjoyed. Cheers for Messrs. Lalor and Kite and the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" terminated one of the most enjoyable "send-offs" held in Ohutu.
