PADDY'S MARKET.
Shortly after midday on Saturday, the Paddy’s Market, which was organised in aid of the Red Cross Copper Trail, was opened in the Town Hall, and the scene was soon a very busy one. The various stalls were loaded with good things, both useful and ornamental, and business was very thriving. Scattered about the hall were various devices for extracting money in the shape of spinning wheels, horse. * races, skittle alleys, shooting gallery, bevies of young ladies with irresistible requests for “just one ticket in this art union.” It was no uncommon thing for an unsophisticated bachelor to be taking several chances on a camisole, cake, or ladies’ manicure set, though what he intended to do with them if successful is a matter for conjecture. However, the tickets were sold, and that was all that concerned the appellant. Mrs. Batt was there with her “soldier,” and netted the handsome sum of £2l 16s 6d. The supper room was laid out with tables for afternoon and evening tea, and the business done was extremely good, and must have been very gratifying to the ladies in charge In the evening the attendance was again large, and the contents of the stalls practically cleared out. The various raffles were drawn and announced from the stage. The sheepguessing competition was well patronised, and the result will be announced later. Orchestral selections were contributed during the evening, irregularly punctuated by the bumping of the balls in the skittle alley and the ping from the shooting gallery. Just on 11 o’clock a temporary suspension of hostilities was called while Mr. Stan. Peyton auctioned off the goods unsold on the various stalls. This over, business was resumed, and carried on until midnight, when calm again came over the scene. Though disappointing as a Paddy’s Market, the effort as a money extractor was all that could he desired, the takings, we believe, being somewhere in the neighbourhood of £2OO.
