The date of the opening of Parliament is generally understood to be October 24. Permission was given by the Borough. Council last night to the Eed Cross Society to use the Oval Domain on October 21st or 28th and to make a charge for admission thereon on cither of the dates mentioned Parents should take warning and see that their boys over the age of 14 years are registered, in accordance with the provisions of the Defence Act, 1909, in the local military cadet corps, as the Defence Department has instructed that all boys eligible unregistered are to be prosecuted and punished for disobeying the law

The Women's Working Club urgently appeals to ladies for assistance in sewing up Christmas parcels to go to the soldiers in France and on other fronts. The articles the men want are in the Club's premises and if they are not away by the end of the month there will be disappointment added to the privation and stress the men are suffering. It is hoped ladiea render the assistance that is so pressingly needed.

The Public Health Inspector for Napier and Hastings states that there is a peculiar and violent form of influenza prevalent in the district. Four deaths had occurred within a fortnight within a few miles of a givon spotj and there are many other serious cases. Whilst the cases did not show any marked similarity with cerebrospinal meningitis there was some similarity between the two diseases. The Inspector also stated that 'trench mouth' is increasing in the distriet .__ Herald.

The question of signs signboards in the Main Street of the Borough was discussed at the meeting of the Borough Council at.some length last night. Two resolutions were carried, one that the Council sees no objection if the foreman considers they are not. dangerous or obstructive and are 9ft. above the footpath and the other resolution was to the effect that all signboards under 9 feet clearance be removed. - A report of the discussion will appear on Monday.
