THE WEATHER.

HEAVY RAIN IN WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, Sept 18. There was a heavy downpour of rain last night, accompanied by further driving rains to-day, accompanied by hail. During last night’s fall, a resident of Terrace Gardens was startled by a loud crash. Investigation showed that a concrete retaining wall at the back of the house had collapsed, bursting in the back door and pushing in the wall of the house. A small child narrowly escaped death. The wind has changed to southerly, strong to gale, since Tuesday night, atmospheric pressure increasing rapidly in the south. Stormy weather has ruled, with rain generally, and considerable snow has fallen in the South Island. Present indications are for a high southerly wind; and cold, squally and showery weather; barometer rising everywhere.
