ITALIAN FRONT.
MINOR ITALIAN SUCCESS. Received 8.55 a.m. LONDON, Sept 18. Mr. Ward Price, war correspondent on the Italian front, states that on either side of the precipitous gorge of the Brenta River, where it reaches the Austrian and enters the Italian lines, there is a formidable system of wire entanglements filling the whole valley ,half being under water of the rushing stream, or on the walls of steep rock cliffs, which are also hon-ey-combed with machine gun posts. The Italian Infantry at daybreak rushed the. whole defensive system, prisonering 350 after a fierce fight''in the dark ravine. The Italians also prisonered 300 in a raid on Monte Grappa.
WORKERS AND COST OF LIVING* A CONFERENCE HELD. WELLINGTON, this day. The local Trades Unions last night held a conference on the cost of living question. A committee was set up to go fully into the details of the matter, Resolutions passed were of the opinion that the trend of legislation during the war period had been in the direction of relieving the employer of liability towards workmen, while repressive measures had been framed to curb the growing discontent amongst the workers. The conference declared the Arbitration Court was a complete failure, Us judgments being without weight or value. The employers, when refusing to meet the workpeople to adjust wages to meet the greatly increased cost of living, are following a policy which must certainly lead to an industrial upheaval.
