SPAIN AND GERMANY.
AMSTERDAM, August 25. “Vorwaerts” is greatly contract! Over the strained relations with, Spain and urges the Government to prevent Spain joining the enemies, and so completing the world’s coalition against Germany. £ , The Chronicle’s Amsterdam correspondent states that G criMno-Spaniah. relations seem to be causing much, uneasiness in Germany. It is stated in reliable quarters that the situation is regarded as most serious. The German reply was couched in much stronger ~ terms than the semi-official announcement suggested. Most newspapers endeavour to conciliate Spanish feeling, blaming Entente propaganda, and paying compliments to knightly Spain, telling her she will always find Germany a good friend. In spite of this, an undercurrent of anxiety is plainly noticeable. The Vossischo Zeitung points ont that if Spain breaks off relations she will carry Spanish South America, notably the Argentine and ■Chili, which, will involve irreparable economic lossThe German Government’s greatest fear, apparently, is that submission to Spain will create a precedent, of which Northern neutrals will quickly take advantage.
