A Bill has been introduced in the New York State Legislature compelling women to be home by 10 p.m. The 45th Reinforcements will be mobilised at Trentham Camp this week. The draft is over 1000 strong. The Huntly coal miners decided to resume to-day. It was decided by a big majority that if the companies do not meet the Federaion miners will cease work in seven days. A woman at Acton Police Court, London, Teferred to another woman in the following graphic phrase: I would not lower myself to speak to her. in fact. I have soen better things than ber crawl out of cheese!" The celebrated actor —author — producer Geo. K. Cohan, who achieved such phenomenal success a few weeks ago in "Broadway Jones" will on Saturday be presented at the Town Hal in his second artcraft production, "Seven Keys to Baldpate," a six-reo! adaptation of the sensational stage play.

A slight fall of snow took phu-e last night, followed by a heavy fro*t, the thawing of which this morning converted the roads and footpaths into a sludgy mess. On the hills this morning there was a mantle of white.
Shipping difficulties have reduced* importation of moving picture films lately. "Film is so scarce that I have not been in my office since Friday, and I have nothing to do now/ 'said the Censor, Mr. Jolliffe, in Wellington yesterday.
F. Ward and Company have received instructions to sell the contents of a four-roomed house, on Saturday, 17th. at 2 p.m. The sale will take place in the Tui Street, to where the furniture has been removed for convenience of sale. Everything is to be sold without reserve.
One appeal was quickly dealt with by the Second Canterbury Military Service Board. It was that of a father on behalf of his son. "What is he aoing?" asked Mr. H. W. Bishop. "Ploughing every day, and, but for being in town to-day, he would be ploughing now." "That's the kind of man we want," was the chairman's comment. "Adjourned sine die."
The chief clerk of the Internal Affairs Department, Mr. P. J. Kelleher, has been appointed inspector of totalisations, and will supervise the working of the machines at Riccarton and Addington this week. This will be the inauguration by the Government of a new system in connection with the management of the" totalisator.
A case interesting to cyclists was heard in Auckland this week, when a cyclist proceeded against the owner of a dog which collided with him while riding the machine. The rider was rendered unconscious and was away from work for a fortnight, in consequence of the accident. Judgment for the plaintiff was given for: £7 10s and costs, the amount claimed being £l6 6s 6d.
The usual fortnightly euchre party, in connection with St. Margaret's Guild, will be held in the Three Stars Theatre on Friday, 16th inst, at 8 p.m. Intense interest is manifested in the close contest in both ladies and gentlemen's sections for the points prizes. About 10 in each section hold a possible'Winning position, and even at this late stage in the season it is a difficult task to "spot the winners." In addition to the points prizes there are, of course, the usual prizes which are to be won outright at each gathering. Lady church-members a,re requested not to forget their "baskets." Admission Is as usual.
The Mormon Capital authorities have been seriously aroused lately through the fact that the picture film, "The Mormon Maid," has been sent for exhibition to all parts of the world. When the film landed in Australia, urgent messages were received from Utah endeavouring to Talock the exhibition of the film, and similar attempts are recorded in' all countries, even New Zealand. The story claims to be a true record of Mormon practices when the faith was in its full strength, and it has been an electrifying success wherever shown. This picture will be shown at the King's on Saturday night.
The Wellington oatmeal agents have been advised that the price of oatmeal has been advanced by £3 a ton. The price is now £29 net per tor. free on board at Southern ports, which means that freight and all charges have to be added. The rlso is equivalent to 3s per cwt or 9d per 251 b bag. Rolled oats have advanced to 19s per dozen bags of 41bs.: and creamoata to 20s per dozen. ether oat foods have also advanced. The m;l!ers say they have great difficulty in obtaining oats suitable for milling a', even as high as 5s per bushel. Farmers, however, have demanded higher rates than this.—" Post."
On Tuesday last Wellington, at the invitation of the Mayor, jubilated at the Allied victory on the West front. Promptly at noon a great noise burst forth. Bells were rung wherever possible, but were practically drowned by the uproar of the whistles and sirens of factories and steamers. The result of all this din was to put the city in a ferment. People rushed about in excitement, newspaper offices were besieged with inquiries, and the telephone exchange was crippled in a few seconds. Practically every shutter on the switchboards in the exchange came down at once. As there were not enough sources of information to go round, the inquirers drew their own conclusions, which varied from an unconditional German surrender to a new declaration of war by Russia. The cessation of the uproar enabled exchanges of views to be made, and the excitement was gradually allayed,
In order not to clash -with, the picture entertainment to be given in
ho Town Hall on Tuesday next for the benefit of the widow and children of a fallen soldier, the Returned Soldiers have decided to postpone the meeting to be held on that day to the night following. The meeting will therefore take place on Wednesday, August 21. The returned men are to bo commended for their kindly consideration for the dependants of a fallen comrade.
