MINES OFF NEW ZEALAND COAST j / REASSURING STATEMENT. ! WELLINGTON, this day. Captain Hall-Thompson, Naval Adviser, in a statement,, says he desires to emphasise that the dangers from mines off the New- Zealand coast are no greater now than recently. Indeed, it is at a minimum. There is an additional danger that owing to the time the mines have been down the cables securing them to their anchors may perish, and result in the mines breaking loose. Therefore it is advisable to navigate confined tidal areas such as Cook Strait in daylight. This statement is made in order to allay the exaggerated rumours prevalent. BUTTER IN STORE. j THE GOVERNMENT'S INTENTIONS WELLINGON, July 29. The Hon. Guthrie says: Some misunderstanding evidently exists in regard to the action the Government is likely to take in connection with butter at present in store, manufactured since April 16th, the date of the Gr-der-in-Council issued fixing the maximum price of butter. The quantity amounts to approximately 59,000 boxes, portion of which is uriaouotedly j required for supplying the local mar- \ ket. When the local market's re- j quirements have been met, arrange- ! ments will be made by which the bal- ■ ance may be disposed of through the , Department of Imperial Supplies, to j the Imperial Government, under the terms of purchase contained in the proclamation of February 2nd last. This will be the only means available of disposing of the butter for exposfr> except under permit, THE HIMITANGI LOST. ♦ WRECKED AT THE CHATHAMS. CHRISTCHURCH, July 29. Advice has been. received that the steamer Himitangi was wrecked on the Monau'Reef, Chatham Islands, at 1.30 a.m. to-day, while on a passage from Waitangi to Kaingaroa. Passengers and crew were saved. No particulars are available here. The Censor has passed the following message, received in Wellington by radio: The Himitangi was wrecked on Mohau Reef. Waitangi, west of the ■ Chatham Islands, at 5.30 on Monday morning, and will probably be a total loss. The vessel is full of water. All • hands are safe.
