TWO MURDERERS ESCAPE. FROM MENTAL^kSYLUM. AUCKLAND, this day. Two men convicted of murder, inmates of the asylum at Avondale, es- f caped last night ana are stilT'at large. Norman Edward Reals, who murdered his sister-in-law and- her Infants at Onewhero on February 8, 1915, and Paita Kai Nuku, a Raratongan, convicted on March 6 1917 ,of the murder of enneth Livingstone at Mangapeehi on July 26, 1916. Both men were last seen by the attendants in the reading room of the asylum at 7.1 S p.m. Shortly after the door was found, open and the men missing, FARMERS’ UNION AND WOOL PURCHASE. A MARTON RESOLUTION. ,j . MARTON, this day, 'Mr E. Newman, M.P., addressed a meeting of the Marton Fanners’ Union on Saturday on the purchase of trie Dominion’s wool by the Imperial Goverment, the following resolution being carried unanimously: “That this branch heartily approves of the terms upon which the Prime Minister has arranged for the sale of New Zealand wool to the Imperial Government until one year after the conclusion of the war; also it desires to support the proposal made by Mr Edward Newman, M.P., to the effect that if woolgrowers receive last year’s rates for their wool it would be a square deal if all the profits from the sale of surplus wool in England should be devoted to a fund for the dependants of the brave sailors of the Royal Navy and Mercantile Marine, but for whose vigilant protection during the last four years this Dominion would probably have been under a foreign flag instead of in enjoyment of unprecedented prosperity; that this resolution be forwarded direct to 'the Dominion president (Sir J. G. Walson), with request that he will take what steps he thinks necessary to secure the support of the whole union to the proposal contained therein ’’ ■■■■•• ■ ■■•

J MAN DISAPPEARS. GISBORNE, this day. Arthur Bryan, a farmer, of Puha r came to town on Friday. His clothes were found near the breakwater hut no trace of him has been found. DEATH OF THOS. TANNER. HASTINGS, this day. Obituary—Thomas Tanner, at Havelock North, aged 88, on complications following an operation last week. He arrived in New Zealand in 1850, and tok up land in Hawke’s Bay in 1853, and has resided since then in the province. He was the Memfber for Waipawa from 1887 to 1890, and a keen supporter of the Atkinson Government. He was a great worker in local affairs, and for many years was member of local bodies. Recently he has been thechief pilar of the Y.M.C.A. He had a family of eight, many of whom are married, in Hawke’s Bay,.
