RAETIHI, July 17

Wet and very cold weather has been experienced here for , weeks. This

morning snow fell, and at 10 a.m. the fall registered about an incE. Towards Ohakune the fall was heavier.

There is a’ very heavy fall of snow throughout Waimarino County. It started on Monday afternoon, and continued on and off since. At Waima;-i----no railway station it is six inches deep, axd passengers, men and women on the South express had a unique pleasure in taking part in a snowball battle at three o’clock this morning. A motor mail coach between Ohakune and Raetihi had difficulty in negotiating the road during one heavy fall.

Hukarca Range and Waipuna Ridge, behind Raetihi, are under a heavy mantle of snow.

Reports from the backblocks indicate that the fall has been very general, and there seems every prospect of it continuing for a time. THE KELBURNE CASE. TWO APPEALS UPHELD. WELLINGTON, July 17. Mr. Justice Hocking’ gave judgment to-day, upholding appeals by Marjr Griffin and Winnie Olsen against conviction under the war regulations dealing with disorderly houses. His Honor said both appellants had regular incomes, sufficient to live comfortably, without seeking money by means of prostitution. There "was no reasonable ground for dralvmg the inference that unchastity, if it was committed, was practised for hire. The appeal of Mrs Griffin was therefore allowed. *The Crown did not offer evidence in Miss Olsen’s case, and her appeal was also allowed. The Court ordered that both prisoners—loe discharged.,from custody. OUR WAR LOANS ‘ ' ' ' ' ; - ' ’• • l.i STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. NOTICES TO BE SENT TO NONSUBSCRIBERS WELLINGTON, this day.
