LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The land in Main Street, Taihape, adjoining the reserve in front of the Post Office on which the band rotunda stands is, it is understood ,to be sold by public auction for cash in the course of the next two months.. The land is to be offered in two lots, one facing Main Street and the other facing Huia Street, the upset prices arc £525' and'£S!oo : respectively. As these are two of the best'business sites in the town there should be good competition for them.
A man named William Ausley, employed as a tailer-out at Symes' Mill, met with an accident o n Monday morning, by falling off a bridge on the bush tram-line. He fell about 12 feet, and sustained a broken wrist, besides numerous cuts and bruises. The injured man was conveyed by motor to Ohakune where he received' medical attention from Dr. Feltham, who afterwards ordered his removal to the Taihape Hospital.
Yesterday afternoon a slight fall of snow took place at Winiata, and to the north of Taihape the fall was considerably heavier. This morning a few flakes of snow fell in Taihape, the hills surrounding the town having a slight covering of white. We are now in the fifth week of almost uninterrupted wet weather, relieved by an occasional fine day. The inclement weather is having a bad effect in some of the outlying districts, there being some mortality among breeding ewes_
The Minister of Defence has received a report from General Richardson in England stating that the Thirtyfourth Reinforcements are very good, both physically and in respect of training.) As to the married men now in New Zealand camps, Sir Jas. Allen speaks in high praise. They are, he says, playing the game. There has been no trouble over calling them up. They arc doing very well indeed with their training, and there have been no difficulties with them in the camp.
An event of interest in the Masonic world has just taken place (states the Daily Mail). The order of Universal Co-Masonry, which admits women to Masonic privileges on equal footing with men, has initiated Miss Alice St. Leger Aldworth, great-great-grand-daughter of the original lady Freemason—a daughter of a former Viscount Doncrailc. The story of the escapade by which she- found her way into Freemasonary is well known how she had secreted herself in a room adjoining a lodge, and, on being discovered, was given the option of death or being made a Freemason, and then bound to secrecy.
