GERMANY'S DESPERATE STRAITS.
The growing nervousness of the Hun is reflecting itself very significantly in the German Press. The people are evidently in desperate straits, and every day their position grows worse Why they ask. if Germany is so powerful is the decisive blow not struck and the Vernon of famine banished? Day after day the official and controlled Press puts its plea for patience, for more trust in Germany's military leaders and in the Kaiser, but still the cry of the people goes up, and the mutterings of discontent grow more ominous.
Here are a fitv typical efforts of the newspapers during last month to deal with the fresh internal crisis. The Deutsche Zeitung says: "England is determined to make a gigantic effort to prevent us from reaching the coast. Moreover, we have to reckon with French heroism and bravery. We are engaged in an action of the greatest importance,, which may demand an extensive lapse of time before it can mature in anything like useful results. This being so, Avhy do we grow nervous, What has become o fthe famous German calmness and self-confidence?" Another from the Deutsche Tagcszeitung runs: "We always make it a point to look realities straight in the face. Therefore we- must admit that our enemies, thanks to American help, have been able to increase their forces in a fashion that we did not desire, They have added very greatly to their aeroplanes, their stocks of raw material, the number of their engineers and their expert mechanics. This is much to be regretted but we must make the best of the situation.
