LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A draft of 341 returned officers and ■men embarked at Wellington at midday yesterday. There are no cot cases. Everywhere in the hairdressing establishments of Auckland there are chairs unattended, not so much because the salooons of the tobacconists have less patronage as for the reason that the men for this class of work are very hard to get. At the Huntly Poultry and Kennel Club Show, held last week, the North Island championships were won by Mr W # E. Whinray for the best Silver Laced Wyandotte cock, and Mr J. E. Cunninghame (Taihape) with a White Wyandotte pullefc.

A pair of spectacles in a case, lost in Taihape, are advertised and a reward offered.

The Red Jersey Campaign in Auckland is now well on the second round, the sum of £13,618 being collected to date.

The Minister of Justice announces the promotion of Mr E. C. Cuttcn to senior magistrate at Auckland; Mr S. McCarthy to be senior magistrate at Christehurch.

A bag left on the Taihape railway platform after the express train left on Saturday evening is advertised for. The bag has the owner's name inscribed on it. A reward is offered on return to the "Times" office.

The Matron of the Taihape Hospltai acknowledges with thanks the following gifts:—Cakes, Huia Hockey Club; books and magazines, Mrs Mooney; fruit, Mr. P. McCann; illustrated papers and magazines, Otaihape Club; strawberry plants and vegetables, TaJhape Women's Working Club; flowers, Mrs. Deadman; books .and magazines, Mr. J. W. Haybittle.

Messrs. W. J. White and Sons' Great Winter Sale is bounding along. With the extension of their premises this firm is now in a position to display their well-selected stock to much better advantage. A few leading price-indica-tors are set forth in their new advertisement in another column, to which wo direct the attention of our readers who are in search of standard goods at bedrock prices.

A further development has taken place in regard to the trouble with the Jugo-slavs on the Ongarue-Stratford railway line. Mr J Cullen on Saturday received a telegram from the section of these men who work roccntly stating that as the Pub'b Works engineer had failed to comply with their demands to be paid by the day instead of by the piece R-ork system they would be leaving the district on Monday to seek other employment. It is stated that there are some 39 mien in the party that has created the trouble, and informations will be laid against, them immediately in the Magistrate's' Court for defying the regulations regarding alien national service.

A peculiar result from: trying a remedy recommended for influenza was experienced by a man in Carterton the other day. He had never touched liquor, but was advised to try a stiff glass of hot rum and cloves for his ailment, which was giving him a great deal of trouble. He took the advice and the rum, and in a few minutes went practically mad. The police had to save bint from injuring himself and others had to be tied hand and foot, and conveyed to the lock-up. Strange to say, in about half an hour he became quite normal again. What became of the influenza we have not heard (says the Wairarapa "Daily News.")
