THE NEW ZEALAND ENTRENCHING BATTALION.
PARTICULARS OF ITS FORMATION. WELLLINGTON, this day On June 28 the question was cabled home with regard to the report stating that 233 men o fthe Now Zealand Entrenchng Battalion were captured. "Nothing," stated the question, "Is known here about the Entrenching Batalion 'formation." The following reply has now been received by the Defence Minister. "All the New Zealand reinforcements in France were last February, o n the absorption of fhte Fourth Brigade, organised,' |wt when the surplus numbers are absorbed they form an entrenching group with a. strength of one bafTalion. On April 12 No. 2 Entrenching Battalion strength was 22 officers and 1130 of oftier ranks. They moved hurriedly by motor buses from Abeele to St Jans Capel to fill up a gap near Meteren, and attached to the 19th division. They rendered excellent service and fought well, but some were captured through being cmt off. The casualties were 251.
