The ladies ’ committee of the Returned Soldiers Ball are reminded of the ' •. f meeting in the Fire Brigade Hall at 8 to-night. A cordial invitation Is extended to all ladies willing to assist. After a long convalescence, a V.C. had returned to the front from England. “Yesterday, adds a London writer, I met his father, who handed me a telegram from the hoy. It contained two words—‘safely wounded.’ ” A bullet failed to penetrate the skull of a nine-year-old negro girl at Atlanta. Doctors at the hospital extracted the bullet, which was embedded in the forehead ’ and was smashed perfectly flat. The girl was able to return to her home immediately after the operation.
The Old Girls’ Hockey Club will hold a social and dance in the Three Stars Theatre, on Thursday, 11th July. Everyone who has attended past affairs of the kind, organised by the Old Girls, know that the really fine evenings enjoyment is in store for them. Those who have not yet patronised the Old Girls’ Social should not forget that it is to be held on the 11th July.
A San Francisco message in the Australian papers says the German raided See Adler, which was sunk in the South Seas, is to be refloated. A steamer equipped for the salvage left some time ago. She will also try to raise another steamer sunk near by. The See Adler ran ashore and was set on fire by the crew, but she is not damaged seriously.'
The heads of two Sydney business firms believe that they have received strong indications that the millenium is at hand. One a printer, received a cheque for £5 Os sd, in payment of an account for an advertisement in a calendar published in 1880—£2 2s for the advertisement, and £2 18s 5d interest, at 5 per cent., for the period of 38 years. The other received from another debtor a cheque in payment of an account of £2l, due over twenty years ago, with interest, totalling £2B added, • ”
