CORRESPONDENCE.

RED CROSS APPEAL.

Sir, —The British Red Cross Society are appealing for funds to carry on their work and they tell us the money is urgently needed. The heavy casualty lists should make us realise the enormous cost of Red Cross work. Eight millions is not much to spend in a year when we remember that in England alone a million cases are treated in a year. This is independently of Red Cross-work in Mesopotamia, Italy, Greece, and in the colonies. The magnitude of the sum expended makes it hard for us to realise that there is a need for it, but a simple sum in arithmetic will easily make it plain. 'Among all the calls of patriotism none is surely more urgent than that of succouring the wounded. Now this preface will 'be sufficient I hope to assure the success of the Copper Trail of which particulars have been given in the Press. The trail is to close on October 18, and it is hoped all patrols of this district will not make idle excuses but pay what is needed. New Zealand is asked to provide £IOO,OOO, about two pounds per family. Many will give more some will have to give less, but if all give what they ought we shall do this quite easily. With the hearty support of Press and the urgency of the cause made ‘clear all hands should make another effort for Red Cross work. —I am, etc,, W. F. STENT.
