THE CREST OF VICTORY.
How Germans were led to believe that Hindenburg’s thrust in the West would decide the war in their favour is shown by the lurid War Loan advertisements printed on the eve of the "Kaiser Battle.” An entire page of the “Frankfort Gazette,” on March 22, was devoted to an appeal for subscriptions. Surmounted by an allegorical drawing of Winged Victory leading the two German armies—the troops in the field and the workers at home —the appeal reads: “The ring of our enemies is smashed. Russia’s gigantic power has definitely succumbed to the German sword. Our rear is free! “The final act of the titanic struggle draws near. In fullest confidence we await its outcome. One more deep breath, one last expansion of the muscles, a mighty demonstration of willpower, and the last trace of the bloody road will lie behind us. The crest will be gained. The golden sun of victory and peace will smile upon us. “But there is one thing we now need. Join up the links of our national life into a united chatri!' Think of the future of the Fatherland and of your children! Sacrifice only can liberate us from our burdens. Out with the last shilling, with the last copper! Subscribe the Eighth War Loan!”
