fire at owhango. * ‘ DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £3OOO. ‘ " * Damage to the extent of about. £3OOO was done as the result of a fire which occurred ot Owhango in the early hours of Tuesday, when Mr Carlson’s sawmill was completely'destroyed. The damage is not covered by insurance. . It appears that Mr. Pierce, a benchman, noticed that the mill was well ablaze at half-past four, and immediately aroused the neighbours, whoquickly arrived on the scene and endeavoured by every means in their power to subdue the flames, but to nd purpose. The timber was dry, and it was found utterly impossible to save, anything. As a result of the Are, 23 men have been thrown out of employment. Interviewed to-day, Mr. Carlson, the owner of the mill, which was situated on the south side of the railway station, stated that the origin of the fire" was very mysterious, and could offer no suggestion as to how the timber became ignited.
