RED CROSS SOCIETY.
The annual meeting of the Taihape Branch of the Red Cross Sdftety, which was to have been held last night, lapsed owing to the small attendance, only four persons putting in an appearance. The meelsg was ad, journed till the 29th inst., at the samflv time and place. fr Following is the report of the past season's operations: The Committee presents the second annual report with the consciousness that the success which has attended the Branch's efforts during the past year is reflected in the balance sheet, presented herewith. A comparison of the balance sheet' with that, of the previous year shows a small increase in subscriptions, which however is more than offset by the falling-off in donations, the income from this source being over £3OO less than for the previous year. A very large increase, amounting to over £llOO is shown in the "shop takings," which is mainly attributable to the inauguration of "shop days" for the different parts of the district and various clubs. In this respect it has been clearly demonstrated that the success of a "shop day" as evidenced by the takings, does not depend so much upon the relative size of a district as upon the individual efforts of those reshMat iQ it. Thus we find that Hihitahi, a comparatively sparsely populated locality, holds the record for the outlying districts, t
This Branch has been able to remit to headquarters during the past year, the sum of £3496 12s (including£ll43 3s 5d from the Taihape Farmers' Sheep Art Union) an amount slightly; in excess of the previous year's remittances which included £1782 15s from the same source. It cannot be doubted that the efforts of the enemy on the West front have unhappily caused a greater demand for the services of the Red Cross Society, and that an even great* er demand may, be looked for in the near future. In view of this contingency it behoves us all to aid to the utmost thfi work the Society, and the committee confidently expects that the proud position which this Branch' has attained of being the largest contributor to the funds of the Society in proportion to population, will, be fully maintained during the , current year and. desires to thank all those who have assisted to place :the Branch in
that position. . . ...... v ' The balance sheet showed^—Receipts: subs. £597 15s 6d; /donations, ,£sl ,12s; . Red Cross Shop 'takirj|6, £1444 6s lOd; "Our Day" cQJLlec.tionSf £ 421 12s;, Farmers'.
