NAMING OF STREETS.

The necessity of having the streets of the Borough ofhcialiy named haa long been recognised by tne Councillors, and some time ago a, was set up to go into This committee reported on its labours, and submitted a list of names, consisting of native birds. While endorsing the principle carried out by tills committee the Council considered some, of the names were too hard for the average person to pronounce. A further committee was entrusted with, the task, and at the Council meeting on Friday..4nade the tallowing report: That the names of streets shown in or original plan of the Borough, be adhered to, i.e., Main Road, (nortfc. and south), Weka Street, Kuku St.* Tui St., Huia St. and Kaka Road; and that the following be the names for the various roads and streets here-in-after described. Kakako Street. —Running parallel with the Oval Domain of street fronting to Huia St. Robin Street.—From Kaka Road to termination of street fronting Section. 7, Blk. 3. Eagle St.—From Kaka Road to western side of railway overhead bridge opposite lot 25 of sec 23, Taihape Linnet St. —From Mataroa Road in a north-easterly direction'to the most easterly point of Suburban Sec 36. Mataroa Road.—From the Main St. following the eastern side of the railway line to the Borough boundary (between Sec. 72 and 74). Moa St. —From the easterly cornerol Sec 12 Blk 14 in a westerly direction to the eastern boundary of Sec 9, Blk 14, thence in a'TTorth-easterly direction to the north-east boundary of Sec. 4, Blk 18, thence along the boundary of Sec 77 to its junction with Main St.

Kea Street.—From Ruru Road, commencing at the northern point of Sec IS Tpe. Sub., along the western-side of the railway line to the south-east boundary of lot 17 of Sec 7, on D.P.,„ 2310 Ellis Road. Pukeko St.—From lot 2 of Sec 22, Tpe. Sub, to lot 10 of same, thence along the western boundary of lot 10 through Sec 6 Blk 14 Ohinewairua (known as McCormick's Road) to Ruru Road. ■ Titi St.—From Kiwi Road to lot 4 of Sec. 5, D.P., 2264 Thrush Road.—From Kiwi road to Ruru road through Sec 5, as shown on D.P. 2264. Whio St.—From the S.W. corner of" let 19 or Sec 23, Tpe. V.S. to lot 5 of Sec 22 on D.P. 1706. Lark St. —From the S.W. corner of lot 7 of Sec 23 Tpe. V.S. to the northern corner of lot 2 of same se^on. Wren St.—From Kaka Road in a southerly direction through Sec 1 to lot 17 on D.P. 2591. The Mayor pointed out that theMaori names of birds objected to by some councillors had been though the committee had kept to the main idea of naming after birds. Cr. Wrightson considered the present list was a vast improvement on the previous one. The report was adopted, and the recommendations are to be given effect: to. The Mayor said if they wanted to get the names adopted by the publicit would" be necessary to get the names posted up on the various streets. It was decided that the works committee Should report on the matter at the next meeting of the Council as to the best method of carrying out the Mayor's suggestion.
