SHORTAGE OF SEED. WARNING TO FARMERS. WELLINGTON, May 18. The Board of Agriculture, after goiDg into the question of the supply of turnip and swede seed, decided to issue a warning to farmers that there would probably be a shortage for the ID IS sowing, and to make a suggestion that they should reserve a portion of their crops for seed purposes. The position in regard to 1919 supplies is still doubtful, but it seemed extremely probable that Great Britain would be short, and attempts were being made to persuade merchants and farmers to grow at least a thousand acres of turnips for seed, to be harvested about next December or January. So far as rape is concerned there appeared a better supply in store to fulfil the 1918 requirements, but there is every indication that the 1919 supply would have to be largely made up from locally produced seed. BURGLARY AT MASTERTON. MASTERTON, this day. The premises of C. Smith and Co., drapers, were burglarised between Saturday night and Monday morning. The safe was partly blown open, but the thieves apparently were disturbed, and left before completing their -work. All they got was one pound, which had been left on top of the safe. About £IOO was in the safe.
