FIRE BRIGADE EUCHRE PARTY. The first, or tne series of euchre tournaments under the auspices of urn Fire Brigade was held last night, about twelve tables .being occupied, and competition was very keen. The excellent arrangements made by Messrs Hartley and Mortland were responsible for a successful and enjoyable evening. These two gentlemen also acted as scrutineers of the various tables, and also at the final dance. The play resulted in Mrs. Dunbar winning the ladies’ prize, a handsome calre dish. Messrs Mitchell and Warren had to play off for the gentlemen’s prize, a safety razor, Mr. Warren eventually winning in the play off. Mrs. Powell .won the booby prize in her class, while Mr. Partridge had an easy win for the similar prize In the gentleman’s division. The prizes were generously donated by Mr. J. H. Mortland. It is the intention of the Brigade to continue these parties during the winter months, and prizes will also be given for the best aggregate during the season, as well as two consolation prizes of a guinea each. 'An innovation, the revival of a one-time popular pastime, is under consideration by the social committee, which will probably be run in addition to the euchre tournaments. It is to be hoped the public will support the Fire Brigade in their efforts to raise funds, which, in addition to providing extra equipment, will he devoted 'to meeting appeals, from New Zealand firemen in cases of accident in the performance of their duties. The evening was brought to a successful close with a dance.
