WELLINGTON, this day.

Copy of telegram received by R. W. Smith, M.P., in reference to the deputation that waited upon Sir J. Ward regarding assistance to those who suffered through the great fire:—"Cabinet yesterday" authorised provision by way of loan up to £75,000', interest at the rate of five per cent., trustees to have control subject to approval by the Minister of Finance. The loan will be for a period of thirty-two years, with the right to borrowers to repay off any amount or the whore amount at any : earlier period or periods. A subsidy of £IO,OOO by way cf £ for £ on subscriptions raised Is also authorised. This amount will' also be placed under the Board of Trustees. Would you please inform Mr Ban- and the chairman of the Farmers' Union, who with you placed the representations before me.—signed, J. G. Ward."
