AUSTRALIA’S WHEAT. WASHINGTON, April 17. The question of utilising Australian wheat was discussed by the Agricultural Department and the Shipping Board. It is doubtful if the necessary shipping is obtainable. The United States has purchased 100,000 tons of shipping from Japan, the delivery of which begins in May and continues till September. A total of 150/000 tons of Japanese shipping is also being chartered. Efforts may be made to divert many of these ships to the Australian trade, but definite action will not be taken pending the conference with Mr W. M. Hughes (Premier of AMERICAN AND AUSTRALIAN WHEAT. The United Press reports that Japanese ships have been bought and chartered by the United States and will probably be used to carry Australian wheat to America and the Allies. Official figures received state that the British Empire had 7,500,000 men in the army and navy on April Ist, whereof England furnished 4,530,000, Scotland 620.000, Ireland 170,000, overseas dominions, 900,000; India, Africa, other dependencies-!,000,-000, including native labourers an* special service men. POST WAR TRADE. Received 10.50 a.m. LONDON, April 18. Lord Balfour of Burleigh’s report on post-war trade will be published shortly, proposing strong measures to prevent dumping. It also urges the 1 Government to introduce fiscal reforms on the lines of Imperial preference in order to protect vital immature industries.
