LATE PRIVATE T. McAULIFFE.

The following letter has been received by Mrs. L. A. McAuliffe of Taihapc, announcing the death of her son, who was killed in action on January 10, 1918:

FRANCE, Jauary 12,

Dear Madam—lt is with very great regret that I have to inform you of the death of your son Private T. B. McAuliffe who was killed in action two days ago, whilst at his duty at the battery position. A shell landed right at the door of tho dug-out and all its occupants, five in number, were killed instantly. Believe me, Mrs. McAuliffe you have the full sympathy of all ranks in his battery, for your lad was just one of our best, who always did good work and managed to keep smiling under the most adverse circumstances: we have a fair share of such conditions too. If it is possible, I hope that his straight record will to some extent mitigate your sorrow, for he certainly was one to be proud of. We buried the five men in- a little cemetery near Ypres, with full military honours. This cemetery has a peculiar interest for all the New Zealand Artillery as it contains tho remains of most of our boys killed during the past four months. Again expressing all our sympathy, believe me to remain sincerely yours. D. Overton, Second-Lieutenant, 3rd Battery.
