TRADING WITH THE ENEMY,
LONDON, February 27.
The "Daily Chronicle's" Milan correspondent states that the authorities have discovered instances of shameless trading with the enemy in silks and cotton suitable for the wings of aeroplanes and airships. Commendatore Gneiehs (president) and other directors of the Lombard Silk Thread Co. with a capital of a half a million sterling, have been arrested. The company made a profit of £BOO,OOO during 1916, further arrests are reported.
WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD, Compulsory Attendance at Technical and Continuation Classes. IN compliance with the request of the Taihape School Committee, arM with the sanction of the Minister of Education, the Wanganui Education Board has decided to bring Clause 124 of the Education Act, 1914, into operation in .the ' Taihape School District. » Parents and Guardians of young persons between the ages of 14 and 17 years, who have left school, and employers in whose employ such young persons may be, are required to send, not later than Tuesday, March sth, 1918, to the Director of the Taihape Technical School, the names - and addresses (private or place of employment, as the case may b2) of a:! such, young persons... Commencing MondayMarch 11th,. 1918, such young persons are .required to attend Continuation Glasses at the Technical School; the . girls for not less than four on one afternoon, or two hours on two evenings.per week, and the boys for not more.than.five hours in each .wees during the school year, the hours of attendance to be arranged with the Director of. the Technical School. ;'Under the provision of the Educa- . tion Act, 1914, if any person knowing-1 ly employs a young person, at any j time (other than the ordinary hours \ of employment) when his attendancei is by. Regulation required at a Con-.; tinuation or ; a > Technical Class, he' shall be liable to a fine not exceeding £2 and not less than ss, or in the case of a second subsequent offence, whe-< ther relating to the same or another young person, not exceeding £5. Any parent of a young person who does not regularly attend a Technical , School or a class or classes as required by Regulations, is liable to the like penalties as afore'said.
Where complaint is made to a Magistrate that any young person required by regulation to attend has been, guilty of gross misconduct, or habitual disobedience, the Magistrate may, after such inquiry as he thinks fit, rei quire the parent of the young person to enter into a recognisance to the satisfaction of the Magistrate for the good behaviour of the young person for the remainder of the period during which he is required to attend as aforesaid.
Notices of enrolment should be forwarded to the Director of the Technical School without delay and all young pgrsons referred to in the above must present themselves at the school on Monday, March 11th, 1918, for enrolment.
The names of those who fail to enrol by Monday, March 11th, 1918, will be handed to the Truant Officer with* out warning further than this adver- | tisement. z
