TOTE PROSECUTIONS
INTERS
TING CASES
CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 8,
A case of considerable interest was heard at the Magistrate's Court today. The defendant was W. H. E. Wanklyn, secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club, and the charges were: (1) That o n November 10th, 1917, at Riccarton, being an officer of the Canterbury Jockey Club, he did unlawfully permit an investment, to wit, /the sum of £2O, to be received on the totalisator in respect of a certain horse named Cast Iron, in a certain race, namely, the Middleton Hurdles Handicap, after the time notified by the said Jockey for the starting of the said race.
(2) That he did take inro account, in calculation of the dividend, the said sum of £2O, which investment was not publicly registered in accordance with the provisions of the Gaming and Lotteries Act, IGOS.
Evidence was given by the police that when the race was in progress the totalisator showed that £242 was invested on Cast Iron, but at the conclusion of the race the amount had been increased by £2O. The defence denied that any money had been received for Cast Iron or any other horse after the "tote" closed. The difference was due to the discovery of an error when checking the totals.
The first charge was dismissed and a fine of £1 was imposed on the other.
