SAMMIES' HATS,. Tie wide-brimmed campaign hats have been abandoned by the United States army for troops actually in the field. In their places, fiats' like the fatigue headgear of the Frencii army have been adopted. The new hat is a sort of fore and aft arrangement, made by sewing two fieavy pieces of khaki cloth together with the seams back and front aiiu adding to the sides other pieces of material f, which fold, up on the side of the hat or may b,'e drawn down to cover the ears. The hat is most comfortable. It also can be rolled up to pocket size or worn under shrapnel helmets. The old campaign hat to fold waTcumbersome for troops in tbe"neld and officers recommended a change. It was so unweildy that some of the troops discarded it entirely when they were changing to the shrapnel helmet. The campaign hat is still worn at billets and in barracks, but many officers are recommending its complete abandonment, en the ground that it was designed for service in tropical countries and is unsuited for operations under present conditions. ! SHORT OF LEATHER. i Leather has become exceedingly scarce in Germany. Mr Henry Wood sends a copy of an order signed by Ludendorff, and dated October 8, fount: on prisoners taken by the French. This states that the amount of sole leather necessary to keep the German army in shoes exceeds 75 per cnt the amount now produced in Germany. The amount of leather necessary for the uppers of these same shoes exceeds by 228 per cent the amount now available. The amount of leather demanded by the army for harness is 52 per cent, greater than the present German production. The order points out that the national stock of leather has diminished as the result of the smaller number of animals" being slaughtered in Germany __ Every dairyman would like to make bigger profits with less trouble.
