2090 PUBLIC HOUSES CLOSE THEIR DOORS. New York, No fewer than 2000 public houses In New York State have been automatically driven out of business within a few days owing to the new amendment to the State liquor laws, providing that, after September 30, there may be only one saloon to every 500 inhabitants in political sub-divisions, of fewer than 55,000 persons. The rising prices for beer and whisky, higher rents, the prohibition and the distilling of whisky, the now State surtax, and machinations of the Prohibitionists are all conspiring to make the business a losing game. It costs the retail liquor man £3OO for a license until September, 1918. * Retail prices for drinlTs are now higher than ever, whisky frequently fetching 10d a glass, and beer sa, while Is 3d is asked at - the bar for a whisky “highball,” as compared with the old price of 7|d.
