LONDON, Dec 5
The Apapa was torpedoed outside a British port. While women and Children were being taken in boats a second torpedo sank them. Nearly 100 were lost. One hundred and twenty landed. Many were taken to hospitals.
The Apapa carried 120 passengers, 100 of a crew, also mails. She was nearing home when she was torpedoed, and commenced sinking directly the torpedo struck her There were enough lifeboats to save all, but the submarine, seeing the women and children embarking, fired a second torpedo in order to sink the Apapa faster and over 80 perished. About 120 landed on the west coast, who endured great suffering. It is rumoured the submarine fired on the -women and children in open boats. The drowned apparently included Mr Townsend, Attorney General for the Gold Coast, and other well-known South African officials.
In reply to a question in the House of Lords Lord Lytton denied the naval escort was withdrawn! when the Apapa was nearing the critical zone, and contended it wms undesirable to publish arrangements for the protection of shipping.
In the House of Lords, Lord Lytton said the food ship which w T as sunk w r hile proceeding from one point to another was the La Blanca. An effort is being made to enable cargoes of foodstuffs to be discharged at foe first port of call. Arrangements for unloading at the port, in question, excluding cold storage, are nearly completed. .
