The largest chd’que ever passed through the New York Clearing House was paid on Saturday, August 12. It was signed by J. P. Morgan and Company and amounts to £1,922,222,222, and was credited to the Minister of Finance and Receiver-General of Canada. The assistant-general manager of Mr R. W. McVilly, states tnat the time has arrived to call an absolute halt in the enlistment of railwaymen for active service. Altogether about 6000 men have now left the Department to join the array, of this number some 1300 have been recruited since last Christmas under the ballot system
The cigarette picture is doomed. The British Tobacco Control Committee is considering the advisability of stopping the practice of enclosing pictures in packets of cigarettes, and the boy’s collection will become a thing of the past. This may not be a bad move from one point fof view, for it is only one stop from collecting pictures to the acquirement of the smoking habit by boys.

A resident .of Hamilton had a painful experience the other day. He was standing on the railway platform tudding farewell to a friend who was leaving by a train ? when a lady brushed past, and a hatpin worn by her passed through his nose. The injury necessitated medical attention.

The bullock-judging competition at the Manawatu A. and P. Show resulted as follows: Weight of bullock was 927;jlbs, and Mr D. Collis and Mrs W. Freeman divided the first and second prizes, taking £6 10s, each guessing 927«1b5. Mr L. A. Abraham, who guessed 927Jlbs, secured the third prize.

There has been another rise in the Avholesale price of spirits, and it is anticipated the retail trade will be forced to sell at 9d a glass (per measure). An Auckland Avholesale merchant, speaking on the matter on Saturday, said: “I do not know,” he said, “where Ave are going to get our spirits from; if things go on like this the chances are New Zealand’ will automatically become a dry country from the spirit point of view.”
In connction Avith Mrs D. Neagle’s evening in aid of the Catholic Church B'uilding Fund, a suprise bag day will be held to-morroAV. A motor car will perambulate the main streets between 10 a.m. and 5. p.m > if all bags are not disposed of before then. Some valuable prizes for both ladies and men will be included in the bags. The agitation of the people of Taumarunui ,who are hoav included in the Waimarino electorate, to have the name changed to Waimarino,” has been unsuccessful. The reason given against the change is that the general portion of the district as uoav constituted is that part which Avas formerly included in the electorate of Waimarino. A good deal of energy and oratory has been and now that this momentous question is settled we will be able to go on with the Avar.
Democracy and the Church of Russia seem unable to agree, for, following the election of a pro-Romanoff Metropolitan, there comes the arrest by the democracy of the Archbishop of Voronezh (says an English magazine for September). Even in the ’eighties the position of the Russian Church seemed a little unreal. A sort of minor Rasputin was brought into a police court, where magistrates and police knelt and kissed his hand. Then the magistrate said: “You nasty beast, so you were drunk again yesterday.” They took him ouTslde and gave him 50 lashes. He returned to the court, where all' kneeled and kissed his hand afresh.
