SEAMEN'S STRIKE.

FIZZLING OUT. SAILORS AT NEWCASTLE RESUME. SYDNEY, this day An important development has occurred in the seamens’ trouble at New castle. Forty seamen have signed on' for two inter-State steamers and one overseas vessel. FEW COAL MINES IDLE. SYDNEY, October 3. Excepting for the Maitland district and some pits elsewhere not yet ready to start, the bulk of the coal mines in the various districts resumed this morning. It is expected that the remainder will start in a day or two. As a result of the resumption, the Railway Commissioners anticipate fully restoring the services to the con dition s obtaining before the strike by the end of the week. The gas restrictions will probably be removed to-morrow. Developments in the shipping position are also pending. The shipowners have replied to the seamen’s request for a conference that no conference is needed. When work is available the men will he engaged as required. THE COAL SHORTAGE. - INDUSTRIES RESTRICTED. MELBOURNE October 4. y ' The Navy Department regulations restricting the use of gas and eleci tricity to a few specified businesses render 300,000 in Australia partially unemployed. Owing to non-resumption by the employees steps are being taken to wind up £he Jumbunna coal mine.
