Leading publicists assert that the announcement pledges Japan’s support of the open door in China. It is presumably approved by the Japanese Government. Japanese and American relations are more favourable than they have been for many years. DEMONSTRATION AT ESSEN. WOMEN WANT PEACE AMSTERDAM, Oct. 1. An anti-Governmcnt demonstration occurred at Essen as the autcome of ?)r. Michaelis’ refusal to state peace terms. The demonstrators were mostly women, who demanded peace, more food and the return of their men-folk. The police and military quelled the trouble. GERMANY AND BELGIUM. A FORMAL DECLARATION COMING PERHAPS WITHIN ’A FORTNIGHT. AMSTERDAM, Oct. 2. “Vorwaerts” states that Germany will make a formal declaration regarding Belgium when the psychological moment arrives, namely, when the question of Belgium is the only obstacle to peace. According to Von Kvehlmann’s speech, this declaration may be expected in a fortnight’s time SUNK IN THE BLACK SEA. ATHENS, October 1.
