ITALY’S KING ON FRENCH FRONT PARIS, Sept 30. The King of Italy was greatly impressed by his visit to Verdun, where President Poincare and General retain pointed out the chief scenes of the struggles. King Emmanuel also visited the Belgian front. FROM THE EASTERN FRONT, GERMANS LOSE 42,000 IN A WEEK. LONDON, Sept 30. Among the latest troops facing the British in Flanders are numerous large contingents from the German lines on the Russian front. The German killed, wounded, and taken prisoners during the past week are estimated to number 42,000. GERMAN AVIATORS INTERNED, THE CHIEF PIRATE CAUGHT. Received 10.80. AMSTERDAM, October 1. The Handelsblad states that the three German aviators internal on Saturday, include the commander of the squadron which raided England, GREAT AERIAL ACTIVITY. CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE EFFECTED. Received 10.30. LONDON, October 1. The Admiralty reports that naval aircraft, on Saturday night, dropped several tons of bombs with good results, on lock gates at Zeebrugge, on St Denis Westrem Aerodrome, Thou- ? \ rout aerodrome, and on Brugeyise works and trains. They caused a large fire at St Denis Westrem. There were several aerial combats, but all our machines returned. THE FLANDERS BATTLE ENEMY ATTACKS REPULSED. LONDON, September 30. Sir Douglas Haig reports: Early this morning three, attacks on positions between Tower Hamlets and Polygon Wood were repulsed. The first, southward of Reuterbeelc, was beaten off by fire before reaching our positions. Shortly afterwards, the infantry advanced astride the Yprcs-Menin road under cover of a thick smoke barrage, accompanied by flammenwerfer. Detachments drove in a forward post, but an immediate counter-attack recaptured the post. The enemy raided trenches eastward of Loos.
AN AERODROME FIRED. LONDON, Sept. 30. Sir Douglas Haig reports: Despite unfavourable weather, aeroplanes continued to vigorously bomb aerodromes, billets, dumps aud railways. The chief target was the Gontrode aerodrome, where a large fire was caused. OFFICIAL REPORTS. LONDON,' Sept. 30. French communique.—There has been considerable artillery fire at Pantheon, Hurtebiso, Craonno and on the right bank of the Meuse. There have been mutual raids' elsewhere. PARIS, October 1. Communque.—Three German attacks on Berry-au-bac were repulsed. German aeroplanes bombarded Dunkirk The French on the night of September 28, bombed the station of Colmar and enemy establishments north of Soissons. ARMY AND NAVY PAY. INCREASED FIFTY MILLIONS ANNUALLY. Received 10.30. LONDON, October 1. It is estimated that. th» new scale of Army and Navy pay will mean an increased expenditure of fifty millions annually.
