THE SHEARERS' SETTLEMENT
The agreement arrived at in the shearers' and shed hands' dispute is estimated to account for inrceases of have been raised by 7/6 per hundred for shearing, and by at least 15s per week in other branches of the industry—the general ruTe being that onethird of the increase is fixed and the remaining two-thirds by way of war bonus, but to operate for two seasons, whether the war is over before that \ time or not. The rates fixed are not greater than those paid in some instances last year, but there is this difference that they will be generally applied. Also, while high rates, not embodied in an agreement, might not be enduring, those now fixed have at least a degree of permanency. Further, the Agricultural and Pastoral Workers' Union, though it will not be a party to any award of the Court, claims that its officials at least have been recognised.
