THE LIBERTY PETITION.
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT. The Liberty Petition .has been signed freely. Although it i s but a few hours since the Appeal" was. sent out to the People, an excellent response has been given. Upon the Petition Returns I have seen already all phases of thought and calling in our community are represented; indeed a more comprehensive record oould scarcely be given. It has therefore been decided to conditionally close the Petition on Monday evening and present it to His Worship the Mayor and Councillors on Tuesday. Should the present representative Petition Return be insufficient for the Council to comply with, the Petition will remain open until Thursday evening. Meanwhile I wish to express deepest appreciation of the response and thank all those townspeople who have risen to this occasion and endeavoured to preserve the civic right, whicJ undoubtedly is prized most of all by the People—and which, probably with little consideration, has been put aside by our civic fathers. When they meet and review the position I feel confident the permit will be granted. Should this be so I am pleased to state that a short musical programme will precede the; lecture and altogether the evening hour should be happily and wisely spent. Yours for Social Progress and En lighteinhent— E. HUNTER. 22/9/17.
